Welcome!

Welcome to the Acute & Critical Care SIG!

Welcome to the Acute & Critical Care Special Interest Group (SIG)Virtual Community. Since we expanded our name to include acute care nurses, our numbers have grown tremendously! Many of our members are fairly new to oncology and to nursing. We also have some very experienced nurses in our group who can be great resources for all of our members. Please consider joining the Discussion Group (or List) for the SIG. Just click on Discussion at the top of this page. We have not been utilizing this great resource. This is an easy way to ask questions of the SIG members and get the answer delivered to your designated e-mail.

I also wanted to let you know that our SIG submitted an abstract for an all day Pre-Congress Session for the 2009 ONS Congress on Oncology Emergencies. We are excited to be able to bring this educational program to our members!!!

Please contact me if you have any questions about anything having to do with the SIG. Remember, this is YOUR SIG. Give me your feedback on what we are doing (or not doing). Your input is valued!

How to join the ACC SIG Discussion List

To join our Acute and Critical Care SIG Discussion list, click on Subscribe to Discussion.

This will bring you to a page where you can join our list and decide if you:

  • Want to get a new mail each time somebody posts something on our list.
  • Want to receive a daily digest (only once a day) of everything posted that day.
  • Want to opt out of e-mails from the list, in this option you'll just go to the page to read any discussions.

  • You will need to fill out a Profile for ONS (if you haven't already done so). If you tell the ONS website to remember you, your password will automatically come up and you won't have to remember it if you are at your home base computer. If you are somewhere else, you will have to know your username and password to enter or use certain ONS web resources.

It's easy to add your questions and comments to the list! You can reply to a topic (or "thread") by clicking on that topic under Discussions and then clicking on Post message. To initiate a new topic, click on Create discussion. Click here to go there now.

    Nutritional Challenges in Oncology Webcast
Do you understand the significant role nutrition plays when treating patients with cancer? Find out the latest information and review the principles of nutrition for patients with cancer, by visiting the new webcast Nutritional Challenges in Oncology: Keys to Optimizing Patient Outcomes. Essential nutritional definitions will be among its topics, and you will have the opportunity to review methods of risk assessment and apply them in case studies. You will also explore various interventions for patients experiencing nutritional challenges and learn to recognize when nutrition is no longer a key issue at the end of life.

Did you know that the Acute & Critical SIG provides a formal mentoring program for oncology nurse professionals? Joining is easy. To enroll, visit www.3creekmentoring.com/ONS to start the process. Select the mentoring program of interest as well as the following codes when creating a profile:

    Mentee group code: 532398
    Mentor group code: 361812

Mentoring relationships officially begin once a mentee contacts a prospective mentor (through the online program) and both parties agree to a mentoring arrangement. These relationships are ongoing with the majority of communication occurring by email and through the online program. However, mentors and mentees may also connect in-person or by telephone (at their own expense) as deemed appropriate and convenient for them.

Mentoring relationships can be either short or long in duration. However, participants should be willing to make a minimum commitment of two hours per month to the program. If at anytime an arrangement is not meeting the desired expectations, a mentor or mentee can be paired with another member participating in the program.

Please direct any questions to membership@ons.org.
